General Overview:
Mount Royal is a centrally located city hotel in Edinburgh that caters to both business and leisure guests. The property is currently undergoing refurbishment to expand its offering, including the addition of a dedicated meeting space due for completion in December 2025.
Mount Royal is situated on Princes Street, one of the most prominent roads in Edinburgh’s city centre. The immediate environment is highly commercial and adjacent to major retail outlets, cultural landmarks, and green public spaces. The hotel’s central position provides uninterrupted views of Edinburgh Castle and is within close walking distance of key attractions such as Princes Street Gardens and the Scott Monument.
Public transport options are readily accessible. Waverley Train Station is approximately 6 minutes on foot. Edinburgh Airport is approximately 25 minutes by taxi or 35 minutes via the Airlink 100 express bus. There is no on-site parking, but paid parking is available at the St James Quarter, a 10-minute walk away. Coaches may drop off passengers directly in front of the hotel for short durations (up to 10 minutes), with longer-term drop-off permitted at St Andrew Square, a two-minute walk away.
Externally, Mount Royal retains its original late-1950s architectural design with a concrete and glass frontage typical of that era. Internally, the venue is undergoing phased refurbishments designed to combine traditional Edinburgh aesthetics with modern comfort. Public spaces and the restaurant are being redesigned to reflect the greenery and heritage of nearby Princes Street Gardens. These updates aim to enhance guest experience while maintaining a professional and neutral environment conducive to business and compliant gatherings. No separate or private access is available to meeting areas.
As of December 2025, Mount Royal will feature one formal meeting space situated on the first floor. The room will accommodate up to 60 guests in theatre style with front projection capabilities. It will offer flexibility for different formats including private and semi-private networking events, small dinners, welcome receptions, or team hub meetings. The meeting room will share the floor with the main bar and restaurant, enabling easy transition between networking and seated formats. While not housed in a separate building, the space can be fully privatised for confidential use.
The hotel offers 169 bedrooms located across six floors (floors 2–7). The room categories include Queen and Twin Standard Rooms, King Superior Rooms (which offer castle views), and Deluxe Rooms as the highest tier. Standard in-room amenities include complimentary Wi-Fi, work desks, safes, tea and coffee making facilities, and ironing boards. Superior categories add Nespresso machines, bathrobes, and slippers, all of which can be removed upon request for compliance purposes. The King Superior Rooms offer notable views of Edinburgh Castle and the cityscape.
The Princes Street Bar and Dining is the hotel’s primary dining facility, located within the property and serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner in a brasserie style using locally sourced produce. It seats up to 150 guests. While it cannot be completely privatised for confidential meetings, the planned meeting space will be suitable for private dining or presentations.
Public lounge or bar areas are currently being refurbished and will be integrated with the restaurant space, with options for exclusive hire expected post-renovation. There are no additional restaurants or outlets on-site. Room service is available 24 hours.
Mount Royal does not currently have experience hosting corporate healthcare or life science meetings. The meeting space planned for December 2025 is part of the hotel's initiative to expand into this sector. The venue has primarily hosted guests attending healthcare and medical conventions in Edinburgh, suggesting potential suitability for delegate accommodation. No master service agreements are in place, and there is no existing collaboration with local healthcare hubs or institutions.
There is no fitness facility within the hotel. However, the City Group Gym is located approximately eight minutes away on foot and provides standard exercise amenities. Mount Royal does not promote itself as a spa or wellness destination, nor does it offer spa treatments or other recreational services within the premises. No additional leisure facilities are advertised.
The hotels city centre location provides easy access and whilst it makes the most of its views across to the castle, the reality is that it sits on a very busy main road with excellent links to Waverly train Station that connect swith Londons Euston, and Edinburgh Airport via the tram network.
